Australian Garden History Society - NthNSW Branch Heritage Rose Garden
by Armidale Heritage Rose Garden, posted 2014-06-12

Idea Description:

Our idea is to develop a significant heritage rose garden on the site of the former orchard at Saumarez Homestead. To date we have drawn up a plan and begun to move some of the 850 heritage roses which have been donated by an Armidale resident. The local branch of the Australian Garden History Society has undertaken to construct, plant, and maintain the rose garden. It is intended that the garden will tell the history of the development of the rose thought the planting, signage and information booklet which will be produced.

Community Benefits:

The Heritage Rose Garden will, when complete, be recognised as a garden of national significance and will be part of a rose trail including the Rumsey Heritage Rose Garden in Parramatta, Old Parliament House garden in Canberra, The Hunter Valley Garden at Pokolbin and ending at Newtown State Rose Garden at Toowoomba. The rose trail will bring a significant number of tourists to Armidale.
