by Peter Le Surf, posted 2015-03-05

Idea Description:

FUNdamental Heroes - A launch pad for life! is a Fundamental Perceptual Motor Skills Program (FPMS) for children aged 2 1/2 - 5 years of age. The aim of the program is to better develop the basic FPMS skills of

  • Striking
  • Throwing and catching
  • Locomotion
  • Tracking

Fundamental Perceptual Motors Skills (FPMS) are the movement patterns that involve different body parts. They are the foundation movements or precursor patterns to the more specialized, complex skills used in play, games, sport, dance, gymnastics, outdoor education and physical recreation. They are the building blocks of any sport or activity we wish to pursue later in life.

These skills are developed using a variety of sporting activities and is designed to benefit all sporting codes throughout New England.

The program is aimed at children for 2 1/2 -5 years of age. The children will be divided into 4 learning levels based on age. Each week they will participate in a 1 hour FPMS session and will be developed through two/three sporting activities.

I believe this program will benefit all sports in Armidale and the New England region and is a vital part of the development of our children.

Community Benefits:

FUNdamental Heroes - A launch pad for life! will develop the motor skills of all children from a young age. This will lead to greater co-ordination and thus greater self esteem when  it comes to playing any sport or activity in later years.

With the children being better co-ordinated from a younger age it will lead to better sporting teams across all sports in the Armidale region.

The long term benefit of this is that we will have more children making representative teams for the New England region. This will lead to a greater profile for the Armidale community as it becomes recognised as a hub for sporting development.
